What to bear in mind if you’re travelling during hurricane season At this point, your holiday plans will almost certainly be cancelled. At this strength, buildings and trees are likely to be felled by winds storm surges and flooding will affect coastal areas and all flights will be cancelled. However, when a storm is predicted to reach a Category 3 or above (Category 5 is the highest level), the state will prepare for significant disruption. Hurricane season in Florida is long, falling between June and November and tending to peak sometime from late August to October. On the other side of the peninsula, the Florida Panhandle on the northwest coast is also susceptible - it was badly damaged by Hurricane Michael in 2018. Typically, the most vulnerable part of the state has been the southeast coast, including the islands of Key West, the city of Miami and the Everglades National Park. All of its coastline has been hit at some point since records began in the 1850s, but some areas are more prone than others. In fact, Florida is the most hurricane-prone state in the country.
